What happened to long living fish?
We have been keeping fish since the mid 1980's. Fish keeping practices have changed since then, and not always for the better. Despite innovation in aquarium technology and the enhanced understanding of ichthyology in recent years, why is it that many hobbyists have difficulties in maintaining healthy and long-living fish? This is due to many reasons such as mass and unethical inbreeding, careless suppliers utilizing hormones and poor quality aquarium chemicals, and the unfortunate overcrowding of fish in small and unhealthy holding tanks. Many of these suppliers store their fish that they intend to sell to you in tanks with no substrate, little to no lighting sources, and with fish of different species. All of these existing variables in the mass market aquarium trade are ideal conditions for unhealthy fish likely to spread disease in your aquarium, promote fish mortality shortly after purchase, and destroy your confidence in the amazing hobby of fish keeping.
Our fish selection is limited for reasons that benefit the health of the fish as well as the satisfaction of our customers.
* We only select the highest quality fish from different bloodlines for ethical breeding.
* We only sell fish that have successfully completed a 30 day quarantine in our disease-free and planted aquariums.
* Our fish are monitored throughout the day where we assess their appearance, eating habits, and overall health.
* We only carry enough fish in which we can responsibly care for on a daily basis. Please understand that this practice will cause sell-outs, wait times, and a rotating inventory based upon the health of the fish in stock.
Our version of the "Cull Tank"
All fish that are healthy but otherwise do not produce vibrant color or display aesthetically pleasing characteristics are placed in a large planted tank to live out the rest of their lives with other compatible fish. We will not sell them as "feeder fish." We will not cull because we at Select Aquarium Breeds LLC believe their little lives are just as important as our show fish.
End of Life
If the time comes to say goodbye, Clove Oil is administered to ensure a painless passing. Clove Oil is recommended by veterinarians as a humane way to euthanize aquarium fish. At no time will a healthy fish ever be euthanized for any reason other than deteriorated health.
The images of the fish, invertebrates, and plants posted to this site are the exact animals and plants you will be purchasing. We do not upload stock images to this site. All images displayed on our site come from the aquariums on location.

WHAT WE WILL NOT DO
